response 2: american artist

What does it mean to be an "American Artist"? by literally changing their name to "American Artist," one artist explores that definition. Many would think of the typical post-war, New York white man like Jackson Pollock, but as a black individual American Artist challenges that notion.

"The indefinability of identity today has been at the center of Artist’s work from the very beginning." They make work about race issues as well as deal with the technology and the internet.

In one they printed all of their facebook photos to put in an album and replaced all the digital images with a flat blue image, and in another piece they created a huge stack of phones, making the device unusable. I resonate with the the way that Artist creates a conversation about the meaninglessness of the tie of identity to internet, and how fleeting it can be.
